Sustainable Water Management ... Why ?

The long-term environmental and social factors in the built-environment need to be considered in the way water resources are managed and used. Sustainable Water Management considers quality and quantity of water use and disposal in safeguarding the local environment and amenity facilities.

Sustainable Water Management ... Drivers For Change.

There are many reasons to change the way we manage our water resources including:

Climate Change - There is mounting evidence that the world’s climate is changing. This may increase the potential for increased water use in hotter dryer summers and increased flood protection measures to be put in place to manage surface water runoff due to wetter colder winter.

Demographic Changes - Changes in population densities and locations have an impact on water resources and lack of water and wastewater facilities restrict where development can take place.

Reduction of Runoff and Pollution - Rainwater, Greywater and Sustainable Drainage Systems facilitate the storage and reduction of post development surface water discharges and can reduce flood risk within a development. These systems are considered to be preventative measures which control and manage water quantity and quality at the source.

Financial - The introduction of domestic water charges in Ireland will raise the awareness of the cost of water supply and wastewater disposal and it will help to raise the awareness of sustainable water management techniques and practices.
